Aspen ART AT THE NELL

Explore the hotel and you’ll find original abstract works of art by internationally recognized painters, sculptors and photographers. Our main restaurant, Element 47, was designed to include an important collection of contemporary Aspen art, in addition to other global artwork, as integral to the fine dining experience. And in many of our Holly Hunt-designed suites, original Aspen artworks play a central role in defining each room’s mood.

In June of 2018, artist Paula Crown unveiled her sculpture, entitled Jokester, as part of her SOLO TOGETHER series of work. Through this piece, which is on display for the summer of 2018 on the Upper Gondola Plaza across from Ajax Tavern, Crown is challenging viewers to reevaluate the impacts of throwaway consumerism. It represents the most recent project in Aspen Skiing Company’s Art in Unexpected Places, a program that has placed art on our mountains, hotels, and lift tickets since 2005. Photos from Crown’s SOLO TOGETHER installation currently feature as Aspen Snowmass’s lift ticket art. To support the sustainability message of the SOLO TOGETHER project, Aspen Skiing Company and The Little Nell have eliminated the use of plastic straws and now provide biodegradable straws only upon request. Visit AspenSnowmass.com for more details.

EXPLORING IDEAS THROUGH REPETITION AND BOREDOM

“A ‘conceptual’ label gives me objective distance from the language. For example, I consider my silverpoint work ‘paintings,’ because they explore painting’s purchase on flatness and spatial illusion. Besides, it is much more difficult to be a conceptual artist. All really good painters are.”

“Humor is part of (my art) but probably absurdity is more what I like. It doesn’t have to be ‘ha ha,’ but it can be strange or beautiful; and interesting processes that move between images and pure abstraction.”

“When people look at a monochrome painting, they put in their minds what they are supposed to be; but I make pictures and they are not just abstractions but they are totally images… I believe all great paintings are also physical things as well as images.”
