Jacob Johnson, Sommelier
Jacob Johnson began his career in hospitality working catering at horse shows in his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. On the heel of his graduation from Lawrence University in Wisconsin, a 19-inch snowstorm hit in June, and he vowed to escape winters in the north and moved to Nicaragua to farm with a non-profit specializing in community education for growing your own food. From there, he moved to the Roaring Fork Valley for another geographical change, yet a bit closer to home. He started his bartending career working at Town in Carbondale, and then transferred to the former Justice Snow’s in Aspen, drawn to their 500+ cocktail list. He pledged to hone is craft in mixology, and went on to become the bar director at Justice Snow’s, then lead bartender at The Little Nell and The St. Regis. During this time, he won the Parce Rum Competition in Seattle in 2014, and also the Ski Town Showdown in Jackson Hole Wyoming. Jacob then shifted his focus to wine and set his sights on a career as a sommelier. He worked as a sommelier at Betula, and joined The Little Nell wine team in May 2019. Jacob’s favorite aspect of working at The Nell is the continued education offered to him, and support in developing his career. When he’s not working, Jacob enjoys hiking and biking, plus rafting with his friends on the Roaring Fork River.
