The Little Nell's Green Initiatives

The Little Nell is fortunate to operate in the uniquely stunning Roaring Fork Valley. With this privilege comes and increasing sense of responsibility to preserve our natural environment and protect it from the pressures we place upon it. Our efforts were recognized by the Colorado Hotel and Lodging Association's 2011 Hospitality Green Award for our work on sustainability. 

Here are a few things we are doing to reduce our impact:   

• Installation of a a 5.0 kW solar array to provide electricity for the 2,500-square-foot Paepcke Suite.
• Implementation of an energy-efficiency program that reduces pool temperatures, fuel consumption and the use of unnecessary equipment. 
• Replacement of all three boilers, reducing CO2 emissions by 300 tons each year. A $600,000 investment will be recovered in 6-7 years. 
• Participation in a comprehensive recycling program.
• Replacing bottled water with glasses, eliminating 52,000 bottles in the landfill.
• Support of local agriculture. Executive Chef Robert McCormick sources more than 50% of the fruits and vegetables locally in summer and 15% in winter. He uses locally grown, hormone-free wagyu beef from Emma Farms, buys all natural nitrate-free Niman Ranch pork and cage-free all-natural eggs. He even purchases local honey made on Aspen Mountain.  
•  Launch of our Eco-Luxe program, rewarding guests who opt to have their sheets and towels laundered every 3 days with complimentary use of cruiser bikes and an organic eco-amenity. 
• Use of green cleaning supplies from Clean Environment Company and Claire Green products. In partnership with Clean the World, we recycle partially-used soaps and shampoos and ship them to a facility where they are cleaned and repackaged, or molded for distribution to children and families around the globe who need soap to stay clean and healthy. 

Additionally, we are exploring the use of supplementary solar, hydro and wind power to provide alternate sources of energy to the hotel.
